Epidemiological Information

The animation below summarises the situation, university cases are shown as red filled circles, remote cases as pink filled circles, carriers as blue ovals and the contact of case one as a green circle. The open shapes denote links in time (blue square) and place (University green, Hall A pink, close contact purple)

Cases 2, 4 and 5 all attended the same night club for 4 to 6 hours on the same night, 3 to 4 days before they became ill, although not as part of the same social group.

During this time period there have been two further culture-confirmed cases of meningitis in nearby towns (remote cases 1 and 2).

As part of the ongoing investigation, more than 500 students have been swabbed to investigate carriage, 147 meningococci were isolated. Only 6 of these were serogroup C.

Multi-locus Sequence Typing (MLST) was applied to isolates from cases 1, 3 and 6 and to isolates from 5 of the 6 serogroup C student carriers. MLST data for two other cases which occurred in neighbouring towns around the same time is also available.
